Overclocking Video Cards

Ok I know that to overclock your cpu you need to have a nice colling system and all...but I was wondering do you have to have a good cooling system if you want to overclock a video card? I have an HP with all generic parts except for the 500w power supply...is it safe to overclock a graphics card when you have all generi cparts in your computer? what are the advantages of overclocking a graphics card? is the performance boost noticable?

Nothing else really matter when overclocking your video card, except the video card itself and the cooling setup, and possible the power supply. You need to watch the temps when overclocking, good temps depend on the actual video card, but you should get a decent OC with the stock cooling.

the biggest difference is that people normally don't overvolt their video card.
overvolting is what increases heat, so as long as you don't get out the soldering iron and overvolt it, you should be good.
some people like cooler temperatures at stock voltage, thats why i bought my NV Silencer, plus it also exhausts some air for me too.

What card are you looking to OC? If ATI, then download ATI Tool, if nVidia download either RivaTuner or CoolBits. They have options for "automatic" overclocking, which basically finds the max core/memory speeds without getting artifacts.

7600gs....so this software automatically overclocks without going over the "limit" or watever...or is this for advanced users? I really don't have any experience with ocing anything..

Same as mine... I highly recommend getting the eVGA 7600GS that has a fan on it. It comes pre-overclocked, stock is 400/800, and the card is already oc'd to 550/850.
