Overclocking

How can I overclock my Asus 7900GT to 7950GTX speeds? I heard it's basically the same chip, just different core speeds.

I just learned how to overclock my CPU, so that means I know nothing on overclocking a Video Card. What are the things to do, and not do for insuring it's stability.

First there is no 7950GTX, there is a 7900GTX and a 7950GX2.

And yes, the only difference is the clock and memory speeds between the two. The 7900GT runs at 450/660, while the 7900GTX runs at 650/800. If you can find a way to overclock it that much, they will perform the same.

do you know the clock speeds difference between ATI x1650 XT and x1650 pro?

The x1650PRO runs at 600/700, and the x1650XT runs at 575/675.

im trying to use ATITool to overclock my card and for some reason i cant get it to go over 702/418.50 obviously i must be doing something wrong withe the memory part

Are you sure you're not overclocking the 2D or 3D low-performance sections? Because the memory should be at 675 or 700Mhz stock.

all i know is that in ATITool it says Core: 702.00 Memory: 418.50

thats all i have really messed with

If i'm using the ATI Tool... do you change all 3 pairs of settings?

2D
3D Low Power
3D Perf

I think it's also reading that my card is 55 degrees C?

I'm @ 450/660 right now.

You think it's a stretch to overclock it to GTX speeds? Whats the safepoint for the video cards temp?

You only want to change 3D Performance.

Do you have any knowledge on how well a 7900GT takes to overclocking? What kind of temps are unstable? What happens when you overclock to much?

Sorry for all the questions.

I'm using atitool as well, where are you seeing the temp at? i cant find it anywhere in the program

Bottom left. Right next to "Scan for Artifacts."

I'm trying to make sure that the 7900GT and the 7900GTX are in fact the same cards, but different clock speeds. Can anyone verify this?

It really depends, the best way to find out is just to play with it. If you set the speeds too high, it should just crash your computer, and not do anything permanent.

i think maybe it didnt install the correct driver or something because when i use ati tray tools and click on fan. it says no supported hardware found.

But correct me i'm wrong... aren't they the same chips minus the extra ram and core speeds? So in theory I should be able to match the 7900GTX speeds and then some?

Try using ATI Tool and raise the speed while scanning for artifacts, and you can also try RivaTuner.

Basically yes, but I doubt you can get a 7900GT to GTX speeds just like that.
