Overclocking

Having a motherboard helps a lot with overclocking, because without one, your computer won't run at all and your hardware won't fit together properly.
 
it allows for more stable management of voltages that can offer higher overclocks, the more expensive boards tend to overclock better but this is not always the case.
 
Higher end "enthusiast" motherboards also offer more granular control over voltages, timings, and other settings that budget and mainstream motherboards don't have.
