Overdue for an upgrade

So I've been using a little old Dell Inspiron 2200 for the past 4 years and let's just say it's age is really starting to show and it's time for a new one. I'm a college student who mainly needs a medium weight laptop since I don't carry mine around that much and one that's fast and will last me a long time. Usually I just go online on a daily basis but I do like to download music and movies and sometimes do some video editing and gaming so I'd like a laptop that can handle all that. I have a pretty average knowledge about computers and I'm thinking Dell or Toshiba would be good but I don't really know who to go with. Either way I think I'll get it online so I can customize it a little but what's going to be more worth the money? Please help me out if you can!

I'm willing to spend from $1000 to $2000 but I'm going to try and buy one around the Thanksgiving day sales. The most gaming I'd probably do would be the sims because I'm more into the video editing really. I've read the Dell Studio is pretty good for entertainment stuff so any advice on that?
