Overheat=Performance Loss?

I was playing Call of Duty 4 a little while ago and I recently went back to check my temps. My 8800GT (EVGA non-overclocked) got to 89C (because of this shit Dell Case). This is too hot (imo...) and I'm wondering, even though it didn't overheat, could it still have damaged something and suffer a performance loss? It's got this hot a few other times as well.

im probably wrong but cant graphics cards get to 120*C without being technically in danger of overheating?

my 8800GT usually gets to about that. in my opinion it shouldnt be a problem.
 
I once had a 6800GT (back in the days of AGP) that suffered a fan failure. The card got so hot the thermal paste dried and cracked. Then the card itself cooked--I burned my hand touching it after I had shut the system down, opened the case, and reached in to see why Counterstrike had gone away.

I was able to re-use the fan after installing an aftermarket cooler, on a lark, to see if it had suffered any damage. The framerates were the same, so I shrugged my shoulders and gave it to a buddy, who used it in a backup system without a problem.
 
You guys with 8800GT's should check your fan speeds. It has a known issue that doesn't let the card's fan spin up when it warms up, so you have to manually adjust it with RivaTuner or the like.

I do use rivatuner, and I do have the fan speed adjusted (I keep it at 52% even in Idle).
