overheated..

i wanted to fold overnight so i left my system on. but the gfx card overheated.

this has happened once before and the card turned off and the rest of the system kept running. so i had to turn it off at the psu power switch.

but this time the rest of the system could have been running for hours before i checked it.

when i turn it on it starts but nothing is shown on the monitor. and the on and restart buttons dont work. i have to turn it off with the PSU switch.

the gfx card isnt dead cos i took it out and the system doesnt run with onboard graphics either.

what could be the problem?

any ideas?

my mum is going away later today so please hurry cos i will be without a decent system for ages if i dont convince her to give me money now.

thankyou

im have the battery out and am trying to reset the bios. any other ideas ppl? its early morning and i cant sleep because i am worried. and i would like to sleep.

Your motherboard or PSU may be dead, try removing all of the components except the CPU from the motherboard, if it's working right it'll beep a few times.

by the way my graphics card fan now spins at 100% speed constantly. usually it just happens for a second and then the system starts. but now it keeps going,

i tried pulling everything out of it. no luck

guys please im sorry for bumping this so much but i need to know what the problem is now.
otherwise i will have no chance of fixing it for ages.

What happens when you try to turn it on? Do you get any beeps? or is it just silence, no lights, no nothing. If absolutely 100% nothing happens its probably your PSU, if you get some lights, beeps, whatnot then it may be a mobo issue.

ok basically i turn it on and all the fans start and everything seems normal. but then it just stays the same.

what i mean is usally when it starts the graphics card fan starts at 100% and then slows after a second and the screen starts displaying. but now it starts at 100% but stays like that and nothing is ever displayed on screen.

ok so your psu is fine. and you say when you plug it into the onboard VGA connector nothing happens... do you get the manufacturers logo when you boot up? the windows logo? or just black...

i get absolutely nothing. im gonna try my old graphics card and see how that goes. but if its the mobo then ill beg my mum to buy one before she goes away. but i need to know soon...

only thing i know to do, is use another video card to see if the GT is dead. Its possible its the board..

Or is there another computer you can try the GT in?

Atleast start by finding out if the video card is dead or not..

ok i have tried it with the GT, Onboard and the 6500.

both have the same result. so it is not the graphics card.

it does seem like the mobo. but i need to know for sure. any chance of the cpu being stuffed?

FIXED.

bad ram slot.

Oscaryu1 told me to check the ram. so i did.

tried each stick. both worked in 1 of the slots. neither worked on the other.

thanks guys

NOT FIXED.

after 30 minutes it turned off again and now i cant get it to work again. no matter where i put either ram stick. what could be causing this? bad mobo? what else can i try?

Have you got another MOBO you can try?

Have you tried running Memtest? It could be that one of the sticks is faulty, not the slot ;)

hmmmm. when i tested it with an old psu it started working. but seeing as that wouldnt ruin my 8800GT i tried my old one again and it worked.

so basically i am back to the beginning with a working system and no idea what was wrong. i am using both ram sticks. i shall test my ram maybe tomorrow when i can be bothered.

It will die again soon. When any piece of hardware is dying, it works, then doesn't work and the circle goes on until it dies completely. Just we are not shure which part? Is it RAM Sticks then?

nah i dont reckon. because its unlikely that both the sticks are damaged. and i was having problems while either stick was in. it seems much more likely to be the mobo
