Overheating issue. what is an acceptable CPU temperature?

Hi all I've been having issues with freezing while playing Counter Strike. I'm pretty sure I've diagnosed the issue as overheating of the CPU, after discovering that the temperature was at about 70+...but even after clearing out a tonne of dust the temperature is still v.high. (low 60s)

Is this an OK temperature or am I in danger of damaging it, or shortening it's life?

I'm using an on-board GPU which is part of the CPU chip so I'm guessing it's getting worked quite a lot. Frame-rate is high though (always comfortably above 100)
 
What cpu do you have? You should try removing the existing thermal paste and apply new or get an aftermarket cooler.
 
At idle you should be at about 35-45C and at load in the 60s and possibly low 70s. But it all depends on what CPU you have.
 
The lower you can keep your temps the better for your processors lifespan.

The temps depend on what the pc is doing at the time, you should only really be hitting 60-70c if the system has quite a bit of load on it such as gaming, encoding etc

Most system i have had the temp hovers around 30-35c when just browsing or watching videos.

Are you using a stock cooler ?

At 'load' (when your computer is doing a lot and utilizing a lot of CPU power), yes, they're fine. But at 'idle' (when your computer is sitting there not doing a lot), then no, they're too high.
 
That's okay for load, although you should see what temperature you get up to while running a stress testing program such as Prime95. If you get up near 80C, you should try replacing your thermal compound as others have suggested.
