Overheating or similar??

Hi there I am not sure exactly what is wrong with my desktop but think it is overheating or something similar.

I have a 2 year old Acer M7711

desktop which is shop bought and totally standard. I haven't done anything to it.

About 3 months ago I was using the desktop when it cut out completely, just like it would if there was a power cut. It then began to do this repeatedly after between 2-6 minutes of the system running. It was like the computer was overheating and a safety system was kicking in or something?

I went into the BIOS settings and saw an option called "smartfan" which was set to on. This increases the speed of the fan as needed.

I have now had to switch it to "off" which causes the fan to be at full speed at all time. This is the only way to keep the system on.

The only thing I have tried to resolve the problem so far is to remove the case and use one of these tins of air cleaner cans to make sure it is clear of dust as it is already well ventilated.

Any reccomendations on what else to try? If more info is needed just tell me what (and maybe how to find it)

Thanks

Thanks for you reply and the link.

I downloaded the software and ran it to check the temps like you said. Here are the results, bearing in mind I have the fan running otherwise i would be lucky to get the comp started and the program running before the power cut out

I took my time with the cleaning and ensured I got everywhere cleaned without removing any of the internal parts.

Thanks again.

Those temperatures are fine. Perhaps you can adjust the CPU shutdown temperature in the BIOS? It might be set to something like 60C which is safe. 70C/80C is normally the shutdown point.

Thanks again for the reply

I have checked in the BIOS and I cant change the cut off temp. I can only view the temps and change whether the "smart fan" is on or not (have to keep on at off which means fans goes full throttle)

I again removed the case and cleaned out the little dust that was in there.

Unfortunately I am still getting the same problem. Used the machine without the fan full throttle for about 10 minutes there then totally cut out and loss of power all of a sudden.

Any other suggestions or is there a 3rd party program that can maybe let me run the fan between slow and full throttle - the noise of it is so annoying!!

Thanks

Still looking for help if anyone has any suggestions.

I have now found that if I remove the side of the case which the fan blows the air towards, the computer runs perfectly without having to have the fan on full power (comp has 2 options: smart fan where fan gets faster as required and fan on full power)

If I put the side of the case on without the fan on full power it cuts off and loses power after few minutes.

Nothing has been changed inside the computer or the case since I bought it.

From researching the net I have seen suggestions to updated bios which I have done. As stated in my previous post I can't control the temps for cutting off only view then which are only about 35-40c even when it cuts off.

Will changing the thermal paste make any difference? Some other similar problems people experienced required the motherboard and power supply to be changed.

Any other suggestions?

It's really annoying having the fan noise from it going full blast.

Thanks

I wonder what that VIN1 voltage is, at 2.99 seems really high for something. On mine at the top, it has Processor voltage and Memory Voltage. A Q8300 default is suppost to be between .85V and 1.36V

^That is quite strange.

You might not actually be getting the right temperature reading in PC Wizard, either. It's usually always right, but you should probably check the temperature in your BIOS just to be sure. That's all I could really think to do. :(

You should not run your PC for any length of time with the side off. If the case is properly designed, all parts get adequate cooling. Open the side and you typically lose forced cooling of the HDDs and DVD drives. It's OK for a short time.

If your CPU runs much cooler with the side off, that would imply the case interior is normally too hot. However the figures you posted don't bear that out.

You should not need to renew the thermal paste after 2 years but it is an option.

The 35-40 temperature trip cannot be correct. Something is amiss. On any hot day the CPU is likely to reach that temperature on idle. If it's 30deg in the house how can a PC be expected to operate below 35? Could another temperature being causing the trip? PSU, HDD overheating?

Did any utilities come with the PC? I looked for a manual for the 7711 but the only one I could find was useless. You could download the various e utilities if you do not have them. Go here and fill in the model, apps are in the Application tab - depends on OS.

You could update the BIOS but that is a fairly serious step to take.

Just wanted to thank you for your suggestions.

Took everything to bits yesterday and found that there was alot of dust between the heatsink and fan. Didnt think to separate the when cleaning it out the first time round (new to looking at the insides of computers) now its working perfectly again. And no fan noise!! :-)
