Overheating problems please help!

Hello, my processor is a 4800+ AMD, its been overheating since my dad put both thermal paste and the pad on. So I cleaned it off with akasa tim clean and put the silver compound, first time I did it it was too thin........I put it on yesterday and ran a stress test and I noticed a gigantic improvement - went to 5:40 before hitting the danger zone. However when I do it now it only takes 1:20 before it gets to danger zone - what am I doing wrong? Im sure I spread it thin enough and the side case is open so its not ventilation problems. Does the computer need 200 hours to "break it in" so it gets worse until 200 hours have passed and then get better.

All help appreciated thanks - having major probs with my pc :(
 
You should never use both a thermal compound and a thermal pad at the same time. In fact don't use a pad at all, they suck. ;)

Oh and the CPU never has to be broke in.. should work just fine the moment you stick it in.
 
I think he means the thermal compound to "break in". After 200 hours the Actric silver will break down, but you will only probabbly notice 1-3C in temperatures. And like hermes said dont use teh pad and TP at the same time. It would be too thick and the HSF will not transfer all the heat. Make sure you PLUGGED THE FAN IN too.

Yes I understand that now - thats why I got rid of the thermal pad, the paste using a thermal interface cleaner and re-applied paste.

Problem is it is still overheating. I have the fan plugged in.

Could the problem be after I installed the new cpu with compound I ran a stress test with the pc unit upright and then played counterstrike before the 200 hour period was done thus causing the compound to either form air bubbles due to it heating up or cause it was not flat on the ground gravity has moved it? im really unsure
 
That could be the problem but thats what the clips are for, compressing the compund and keeping airi from it. what type of tp did u use? and now come to think of it, how much did u put
 
I used Akasa brand 450 silver based thermal compound. The clips are done so the cpu fan cant move, and at first I used so little you "can see the metal beneath" - that was really thin as adivised by a website, this time I used a bit more, about the size of a grain of rice i reckon and made sure there was most in the middle so it could be spread by the pressure of the fan
 
Try re-applying with the same amount of paste? And when i have re-applied should i do the stress tests and "curing" with the pc flat on the ground instead of upright?
 
OK i have re-applied. By the way if the heatsink sticks to the processor that means there are no air gaps right?

This time i have used less - by the way my processor seems to have little 'cuts' in it........only a few miscroscopic nicks on the surface of the metal and i dont think thats normal - is it?
