overheating problems

my friend built himself a new pc
he scrapped most of it from somewhere and bought the ram and the case

now he has a problem with the heat sensor on the mobo being broken.
even before he could login the pc would shutdown again.
when he looked in the bios he saw that the cpu was 80 degrees
but when he feels the cpu (took the cooler and he feels right onto the cpu itself
its just cold to the touch so there is no way it was 80 degrees 2 minutes ago.

When he boots his pc now he tries to turn of the automatic shutdown when he gets to hot. but he doesn't even get that far before it turns itself off.

any of you guys have an idea?

it could be overheating. he touches the CPU when the computer is on? the CPU heats up and cools down in a matter of seconds.

Check around in the BIOS, if there's anything that will stop it turning off if it's overheating, I know my Gigabyte board has that option...

he touches it when it's turned off. are you sure it cools down from 80 degrees to cold to the touch within 2 minutes?

that the whole problem... i know the option is there but you just can't get to it before he overheats

Ah right, Try putting a large fan next to it, to see if it'll 'drop' the temps a few degrees allowing you to look around?

i haven't had time to check out the way he's installed it maybe i'll get to it this thursday.

i'll pas on the advice you gave already

if the heatsink isnt properly installed then it wont get hot !!! this is most probably why it doesnt feel hot because it is not in proper contact with the cpu

was my first guess to because its his first build
but he was pretty confident that it wasn't the heatsink installation...
anyways i'll check it out hopefully this week and you'll hear what the problem was

Yes... It only takes mine around 30 seconds...

i just went over to the guy and checked out his build.
everything looked fine he said he applied the heatpaste just like you ought to.

the only thing i could think of he somehow managed to screw up the heatpaste.
so i check it out, i removed the heatsink. and i dunno what he used for heatpaste...
but it sure wasn't good heat paste i can tell you that. it was way to liquid i could practically blow it of of the cpu... so i cleaned everything out reapplied some good heat paste. and it worked like a charm.

thnx for the advice
