Overwriting a broken HD

Hello,
I need some help in regards to wiping data from a laptop HDD.The problem is the laptop is still in warranty and the shop wants the broken HDD in order to give me a new replacement.
What I want is to securely erase the data on the failed HDD. I tried many programs that are used for that purpose ( DBAN,Killdisk, etc.) but none of them works when the disk is broken. My idea was to try to format the hdd and then put new data and do the same process a few more times. Is this going to do any good? ( even after reading a lot of info about HDDs I am still not sure how they actually work...:)) I would be glad if people who are sure about this topic answer the question.
Thanks a lot

If the HDD has failed, there is nothing you can do to delete the data. If you can't slave the drive to another system and remove your data then its toast.
