Okay, so now I'm stuffed. VirtualBox running under ubuntu linux refuses to start because it doesn't have permissions to edit stuff. So I go on and try to change the permissions and WHAM, it says that the ower is "root" and I can't change the permissions because I AM NOT THE OWNER! I know what I own and what I don't, and refuse to take this kinda attitude off a stupid machine...

...what do I do? Anyone know? Help GREATLY appreciated, ty for all replies.

How do you know you own that particular Folder? Because you're the only user on the system? Things don't work that way in Linux, and for good reason. I'm not certain if your comment about the 'stupid machine' was in jest and/or referring to Linux, but if it was, then you might want to re-think your decision and stick with Windows.

Anyway...

Type
sudo nautilus
then go to the folder you wish to own, right click on it, and change the permissions. Entering the above command will grant you complete access to your file system though, so don't go 'exploring' too much.

Regarding my comment "stupid machine"...that wasn't to be taken literally. LITERALLY, it was supposed to say "Okay, this thing is acting different from what I'm used to, I'm clueless!". Certainly it wasn't a reference to linux. "Operating System" != "Machine". And I'm going for linux anyway even if I have to smash a bulk of rock using my head to get it work the way I want to, period. I can't afford buying 26573 copies of windows anyway, free OSs are the way to go.

Anyone know any good websites or so where I could learn how things DO work in linux? I gotta learn all this console-stuff too.

When I'm done, do I just type "sudo nautilus" again or what? And is there a way I can grant any program as much permissions as they want, or I want? Or do I always have to type in stuff like "sudo nautilus" and so on?

Indeed. Just be prepared to hit a lot snags your first few times around. Linux is not Windows (thank the gods) and it works completely different. Why would you need to keep buying Windows? Are you using multiple systems?

Once you give yourself complete control over the file system, you can assign permissions to different folders. You can change the owner, allow them to be accessed only by certain people, etc.
