P D 805 @ 3.6 GHz

I believe the throttling starts at 75 and shutdown is at 80 for Pentium Ds. I can probably find out for sure if anyone has a pressing need to know. As said above, just because it's still running, that doesn't mean it's OK to leave it like that for a long time. The hotter an IC gets the more prone it is to electron migration (higher vCore is a factor as well).
 
I'm not certain about sustained, long-term operating at that high of a temp, but they should be able to reach it before they go into self-preservation mode and shutdown. To reference another Post of mine, my car *can* operate at 6,000 RPM if I needed it to, but it's not something I'd normally want to do every day for miles on end.

So the temperature specifications I found for the Intel Pentium D 830 & 840 at 69.8° Celsius aren't too far off. You don't want to run your Pentium D 65 nanometer processor at a temperature close to or hotter than 69° Celsius for extended periods of time.

Cromewell, if it isn't too much trouble, I sure would be interested in the exact throttling and shutdown temps of the D 805 seeing how I own one. I appreciate the help and info man.
 
Ok, According to Intel the highest case temperature for the 805 is 64.1°C. Tcase is measured at the centre of the heat spreader. PROCHOT# appears to be configurable by the BIOS so you'll have to look there for the throttle temperature (it may be manufacturer locked or not set at all). THERMTRIP# (shutdown) is approx. 20°C above Tcase, the exact value is most likely set at manufacturing time and will be slightly different for all processors.
 
Okay....here's one for you. I just popped in the old XP hard drive to do somethings and decided to run the ASUS Probe software to see how my CPU temp was in XP. It shows me idling at 44 and a load temp of around 60. How can an OS make that much difference in CPU temp? I guess Vista was demanding more from my CPU? (See first post for Vista temps)
