P35 southbridge important consideration?

There are some P35 mobo with ICH9R and some with ICH9. Does the "R" make any difference in terms of performance?

Not significantly. The northbridge handles most of the performance; the southbridge just determines other things like how many SATA ports, etc. there are

ICHxR means it has RAID controller built in, it should have the same # of ports as the non-RAID version.

Thanks for the response after waiting for a few days. With Cromewell added on to it, I had just realised that I am new to RAID and RAID controller. Can anyone tells me what is it all about and do I really need the RAID function?

And also, as for the ICH9R southbridge, does it means thay there are 9 RAIDS? Please correct me if I am wrong.

ICH9 just means it's the 9th generation IO controller hub. The R part means RAID. It supports RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 and Intel Matrix Storage which mixes RAID levels. For example, with a matrix RAID you could have a RAID5 and RAID0 on the same drives.

Most home users don't need RAID. What it does is use multiple drives to increase performance and/or add redundancy so that a drive can fail without you losing data.

Once again thanks for all the responses. From all gathered up, it appears that I do not need the RAID as I am only considering of including a single hard drive. I am considering the gigabyte p35 ds3r motherboard but it does have the ICH9R where I do not use the RAID. Unlike the asus P5K, which is ICH9, is not my choice as I prefer gigabyte motherboards.
So would I be getting value for money if I go for something that I would like to have but do not use(gigabyte ICH9R) or go for something that I have not decided but does not have RAID which is suitable for non server use?

The Asus P5K does have a RAID controller, almost all new motherboards come with a RAID controller built into the southbridge or have a third party controller added. With the case of the P5K, it uses the JMicron JMB363 controller for it's RAID.

Most people who buy a motherboard with RAID capabilities don't use it. And no, you arent paying extra for the ICH9R chipset.
