P4 2.4 to P4 3.0 HT, worth $250 CDN?

I want to upgrade my current P4 2.4GHz processor to a P4 3.0GHz HT processor.
That is as much as my P4V88 M/B Socket 478 can take. (See my other specs below)

Most games now have the 3.0GHz as recommended processing power, but is it a good investment for $250.00 Canadian? Will it pay off in the end? Will I see the difference with HT in video games and office apps?

If you've done such an upgrade, please let me know. If you haven't, let me know what you think.

Thanks in advance guys!

$250 is way overpriced for that, you can get one for about $90 USD on Newegg.

You will notice a significant difference, however I would recommend upgrading to a newer socket, such as LGA775 or AM2.

WOW! $90 USD?! I'll look into that. Thanks!

Now, the thing is that I just upgraded my GPU (526MB Radeon AGP8x), bought more RAM (DDR400), and installed additional fans. If I get another M/B, my RAM and GPU would be useless... I can;t let that happen, so I want to invest more on my current M/B and live with that for another 12 months. Unless I could still use my current GPU and RAM on the LGA775. In that case, I would totally consider that, but can I?

I think you mean 256MB ;)

LGA775 motherboards are DDR2, and most, if not all, are PCI-E. So no, you couldn't keep the RAM and GPU.

I would get the 3GHz CPU, just certainly not for $250 (CAD or USD)

Can your motherboard support dual-core processors? Because that would be a worthy upgrade, and would be a big improvement over a single core. However, it would cost a bit more than 250CAD.

Since when is there a dual core Socket 478 Pentium 4?

You're right about it not being a 526MB GPU, it's a 512MB ATI Radeon X1600.

As for the Dual Socket 478... is that... for real? Even though I doubt it, please give me a link if it is!

As for the price, everywhere I go around me it's around the $250 CDN mark. I live in Toronto, anyone know where I can find it for cheap?

Actually, I don't think my M/B will take a Core Duo. Specs max out at P4 3GHz and will take almost anything below that.

but the FSB on those processors is 667mhz, and a lot of 478's are either 533mhz or 800mhz...so wouldnt it not be compatible...or do i have no idea what im talking about? :P

Hey!!! Easy on my motherboard Clutch... I still love it just the way it is.

Once again, as for pricing:
Can anyone direct me to a PC shop where I can find a good price on a P4 3.0Ghz with HT?
