P4 Temps OK?

So i started on my endeavor to build up a socket 478 desktop using some parts i got for free (hence the socket 478). Right now i am running a pentium 4 3.2 HT, 1gig PQI pc3200, geforce 4 ti4400 :( , all on an Aopen MX4SG-L mobo (mATX). With all this, not yet overclocked, my cpu is idling at about 47C. In games, such as cs:source, it often gets up to 62C. I have quite sufficient air flow in the case, so i cant really understand why the temps are so high. If i ever want to overclock to, say 3.4 or even 3.6Ghz, what temps should i be idling at now? Thanks,

I have the 3.0E and the pressys get hot...idling at 47 sounds about rite..get a bigger and better hsf, do some reseach and search on this forum for help. Also if u oc rite now u may not run into problems..i have oced to 3.8 and didnt see any difference in temps...basically it just comes down to its a hott proc, so dont worry, also if it makes u feel better, try and reseat the proc maybe u messed up with the thermal paste.
 
I've got the 3.2HT but in LGA775 chipset, and it runs pretty warm as well, highest I see is lower 60's. I burned up a mobo a couple months back when the processor started hitting in the mid70's for no apparent reason, so I contacted Intel and they said that the running temp for it should be 67.7 or below, dunno if it's the same for 478 or not though.
 
If you get really hot, you could always get a thermaltake big typhoon. Im at 34 C @ 3.85Ghz, so it cant be too bad!! ;)

Did you overclock the processor? If so, please tell me your methods. I anxious to oc this thing :)
 
Have sam CPU oc to 3.4 only and did not see a temp. change. Those temp. are good for that CPU. 3nderW what is your room temp? How are you fans set up?
 
the s478 prescott cores used to run hot, and this was a problem for those trying to overclock with stock cooling. If you pick up an after market cooler you should be able to keep temps under control whilst overclocking
 
Well, this cpu is a Northwood (luckily). I have an Arctic Cooling Super Silent heatsink/fan, and this is always running lower than id like. It controls its own speed depending on the current heatsink temp, but to me it seems too slow. 500rpm at 45C and only 1200rpm at 62C obviously doesnt cut it. Otherwise, i have a large rosewill 120m fan on the top of my case, and an 80m exhaust on the back. There are vents drilled as well into my custom case. Keep in mind this case is a sideways mATX, so the top is actually the large side panel. Thanks for the info, keep it coming.
 
If I correct those temp. are to high for a Northwood cpu. You need to find a better fan 500 rmp is not good.
 
I overclocked the processor with stock fan to 3.33GHz and the temps were pushing 50 C at idle I put a HUGE after market fan on it with good silver solder paste and turned it up to 3.6Ghz it ran stable and usually never got over 55 c in a full load unless my case fans and cpu fan got dirty. It usually ran between 32-37 C at Idle. If you don't have the memory to handle the overclocking it may never happen stabaly and if you don't have the air flow in the case it will get hot and unstable. Small things such as getting cables out of the way of air flow goes a long ways and using the good thermal paste, not cheap stuff.
