P4 Vs Amd

What do you guys think is better? AMD or P4. In my personal opinion, I like AMD because I do a lot of gaming and they're cheaper than P4's.

AMD created the Athlon XP series to be equivelant of the P4. The number that is displayed (2600+, 3000+, 1800+ ect.) are supposed to be the equal of what a P4 can do because AMD uses more advanced designs for the chips. The clock speeds are actually slower than the number displayed. I believe they are a lot better than Intel for the price, but they are so widely used that AMD has a lot of competition.

That might be a bit of a stretch :p

Interesting that Intel is also going in this direction with their 5xx series of procs :)

To be honest they're about equal. Intel has a traditional advantage with multimedia, AMD a traditional advantage in serious programs (made much more significant with the Athlon64s)

I like AMD cuz they have adjustable multi's and overclock more to my liking. I feel trapped when overclocking Intels cuz theres alot of things you cant change like multi and you have to run in ratios unless you have extreme hardware which i cant afford lol.

AMD's because i've had more experience with them, I havn't had much experiences with p4's, but I have have had experiences with Celerons *PUFF* :p

for my usage i would prefer a P4, but for a definate gamer then an AMD would be the obvious choice. celerons are cool they are just a cheaper version of pentiums.AMD's always seem to handle applications a little bit better.

If you want a processor, the best and fastest in the world is the "AMD Athlon 64".

64bit processor, compared to Pentiums 32bit!!!

So consequently the Athlon 64 wins again, not only by speed but power!! U can get the 3.8 GHz for about £350.

Oh god here comes the fanboysim ;)

64bit processor, compared to Pentiums 32bit!!!
And........ (not to mention the fact that everything since a Pentium2 has been a 64bit (int) processor.....) ;)

So consequently the Athlon 64 wins again, not only by speed but power!!
Again... the fanboysim

Too bad it's uninformed. There is no 2.8Ghz AMD chip. And there wont be for quite some time, the Athlon64s as they are, wont be able to breach the clock ceilings set by the NorthwoodCs -- why? Because they only have a 17stage pipe.

Now before you get all bent up cuz of the fanboy comment --
1. You're not the first and odds are you wont be the last :)
2. Im a AMD fan. I hate Intel.
3. Im NOT an AMD fanboy. I reccomend Intel when it has merit.
4. I'm not an anti-Intel guy, Intel has very solid strengths and, as stated, i'll reccomend them all the time

Now onto the technical massacre:
1. For gaming: THERE IS NOT A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE between comparable Intel and AMD platforms. Quoting 100 points on 3dmark (or even 500) or a 10fps improvement is NOT classified as a world of difference. That's just pissing contests.

2. Intel has, and most likely will continue to, dominate in video encoding applications (until there is more optimized 64bit capable encoders etc ... its getting there but Intel still wins in general).

3. AMD is the only effective choice for users wanting to do engineering/math/certain-video applications. AMD has also been the traditional winner in the business software sections

4. Things get interesting when you start to analyze systems on a "performance per cost" (typically where AMD is the winner), "performance at any cost" (where it doesnt matter because its just a pissing contest) and "performance with a certain cost ceiling" (where Intel is commonly the best route)

:)

LOL, well put Praetor I agree totaly and I also recommend Intel where it has merit but for the average user I tend to recommend AMD most often for the price and the fact that I also love AMD.. LOL

For the average user looking for a $1200-$1500 setup, a P4C is a much better route than a AthonXP ... squeezing a Athlon64 into that would be a nice challenge -- doable for sure but not neccesarily for avg users :)
