p4 vs celeron

Which of these would have better performance?

Intel Pentium 4 2.2GHz 400MHz 512KB Socket 478 CPU

or

Intel Celeron 2.8GHz 478-pin 128K 400MHz CPU

I have found both for roughly the same price. Obviously the celeron has a higher frequency but the p4 has a much better l2 cache...I dont know which one would be a better choice...

There really isnt a difference noticalbe between 2.2 and 2.8ghz with the Pentiums. But the P4 will outperform the Celeron, and would be more overclockable if you do any overclocking.

Hell, if that P4 is a Northwood, you could pry get it up to 3.8ghz with stock cooling.

p4 is way better , but now DUAL core all the way ;)

There are no dual core that will work with my mobo. And upgrading my mobo means upgrading everything else. Anyways, if my computer is 5+ years old and I have never took the heatsink off of the cpu, would it be in need of new thermal paste?

Newegg still has a few old P4s, bought my Northwood for $50 on there. And that was just last week. I believe they have about 5 to choose from for socket 478.

P4 of course..i have a P4 1.5GHZ in my old Dell, kills a 2.8GHZ Celery

if u dont have a Dell, Compaq, HP, Gateway then yes, u can overclock..if u do have a prebuilt, chances are u cant, cause they lock their BIOS

go on ebay, find a cpu cheap

my cousin has a celeron d 3.33ghz and there is no lag on any game n seems to run equally with my pentium d 820 on single core programs such as bf2

what would be near the same of a celeron d 3.33 that is a p4?

put it like this, any Celeron sucks..P4's are alot better cause they have more L2..512KB compared to 256KB, like wat the Celeron D has

If it really is 5yrs old then it will be good for you to upgrade because recently i also had upgraded my PC to C2D from P4 2.0Ghz and it cost me only merely about $300.

$300 for a Core 2 Duo setup? Are they really getting that cheap now? I was thinkin bout gettin one myself....but seeing how AMDs coming out with a new CPU this year, i think ill wait and stick with AMD, they appear to be some arse kickin CPUs.

Go AMD!

No man, a Celeron 2.8GHz would beat P4 1.5GHz by far

When the first celeron came out it had 128KB but some later versions have 256KB

Celeron D had 256KB when it first came out, but the current versions have 512KB

In the other hand, P4 had 256KB when it first came out. Later versions had 512KB, 1MB and 2MB.

And remember that cache memory is not everything. The northwood P4 beats Prescott in many cases when they are running at same speed. Though the Prescott have more cache memory.

That is not true, Celerons have a lower FSB as well. I wouldn't touch a Celeron because of their lackluster performance.

True, celeron have lower FSB and it lacks Hyper threading technology.

However, older Pentium 4's lack HT and they have slower FSB than newer ones. So, a new celeron would perform equally or even better than older P4's
