Ok heres the story.. this kid at school is trying to tell me, His laptop's pentium M, i think 1.8 GHz, "could smoke" my pentium 4 3.2 GHz. I mean is it just me or is he f**king retarded. lol cuz if im the dumb one here i wanna know. Im pretty sure the L2 cache is somwhat high but it dosent make it better, and also dosent only the pentium 4 have hyper threading, and if Pentium M is so much better why wouldnt they use them in desktops....
plz answer soon :D :D :D

i dont no wut that is or how.. im guesing it shows the specs on them?

benchmarking, how can i put this, basically "rates", so to speak, your computer. you can benchmark you processor and the benchmark program will give you a number. you could do it on your computer, then your buddy could do it on his and the one with the higher number would be the champion of the world.:) lol.

there are quite a few benchmarking programs. i think that 3dmark '05 is probably the most widely used on this site.

you can download a trial version of it, so you dont have to buy it.

fishsticks, I have some bad news, your friend could be right. A Pentium M is a pretty hard CPU to beat, as long as he has a good video card and RAM, he might just be right.

cause they are usually low voltage chips capable of using less power, for laptop batteries. unless he is running 2 gigs of ram like u r i dont think his benchmarks can match urs.

He is right, that pentium M is a killer cpu. it beats amd's in games too. Tell him to run some benchmarks and compare.

That only explains why they are used in laptop,s not why they arn't used in desktops. I'm interested in the subjet too.

He is probably correct, a full powered up P-M will smoke most stuff on the market. And heavly oc'd P-M 745 will out perform almost everything on the market.
Clock speed is as you know not the only factor in performance.

and if Pentium M is so much better why wouldnt they use them in desktops
Some people do, they run cool and at low voltage. BUT check out the price, rather expensive

EDIT: And dont double post

Yeah fishsticks, sorry to burst your bubble, but the Pentium M is superior to the Pentium 4 series, clock for clock.

And, they are going to use these processors in the future for the desktop.

Not mainstream thats for sure, unless your falling into the trap of calling conroe a P-M, which a lot of people are doing lately.

Although P-M are used on the desktop market for some, when the need requires it.

Yup... you got me. The actual Pentium M isn't used by the mainstream in desktop computers, more for enthusiasts trying to get a good 3DMark or SuperPI score.

And, yes... I did fall into the trap of calling a Pentium M a Conroe. The way I should have worded it is "The Pentium M's architecture (P6++) is going to be imported into a desktop chip, known as the Conroe."
