stupid question... ok so I have the p4p800 mobo... it says it can support up to 4 drives in the menual, but I can only plug in 2 hard drives, where is the other 2 slots ?

Yea the other cord, or IDE slot usually is for the CD-DVD drives, but you can unplug then and plug in more HDD.

There are 2 connectors on each cord. Longest connector to Master drive. Shorter one to slave.

ummm... with 1 IDE cable I can only plug in 1 hard drive... so 2 IDE cables only 2 hard drives... maybe i need some cable extension or something ? hrmm:confused:

Most IDE cables have 3 plugin's. One for the mobo and then there is 2 more for hooking up a master drive and a salve drive. I'm guess your's just has two? Is this a new computer?
I dont think those cable cost to much either...

Are you using IDE?
ok lemme explain more...

it's p4 2.8ghz, 2gb ram, so it's fairly new pc...

on the motherboard I have 2 plugins for the IDE cables, so each of them is for 1 hard drive, therefore 2 hard drive can be connected... but it says it supports 4 hard drives, so there should be 4 plugins on the motherboard, no ?

only 2. with IDE, each plug is for two IDE devices. A cord has:
Connector to the system board, usually blue
Connector to slave hard drive in middle, gray
Connector to master hard drive, black

what you mean by only 2 ? so i can only connect 2 hard drives ? or 4 doable ?

Hoepfully this will help out...

If you have two cords like this you would be able to have 4 drives hooked up...

thanks, but each asus cable doesnt have that 2nd connector, only 1 at the top... i might need to get new connector:confused:

damn im stupid... i just checked each cable has 2 connectors, so thats 4... BUT 2 of them are used by cd rom and burner, and other 2 for 2 hard drives... so there's no way to connect 2 more hard drives if 1 cable used for cdrom/burner ?

If all your spots on the cables are taken up, you'll have to get rid or something to put something in it's place.
