I'm planning a new gaming computer, and i'm struggling to pick between the new Pentium 4 HT extreme edition 3.76, and the AMD Athlon FX...
i hear that AMD has lifted its standards a whole load, so i'm willing to give them a try should that be the recommendation...
what do you reckon?

I have a athlon fx-55. If you match it with enough ram a good video card You got a excellent gamming system.

woah not everyone is loaded with dou.. :)

and usually for that reason I would not recommend a athlon 64 fx-55 BUT in the first post he said he was trying to decide between the new P4EE and a athlon fx. I asume he know the prices and would not of asked the question if he could not afford it.

oh and by the way I not loaded but I was smart enough to keep a bank account just for buying computer that I put a few dollars in when I could spare. This computer is 5 years of saving my money up.

Thats a good idea!

If money is no object then yes, the FX cpu's are nice.

However most people do have some sort of budget, a spending limit, and in these cases a cheaper cpu will do just fine and the saved money can be used on better graphics, memory & whatnot. I've seen way to many people building systems with crazy expensive cpu's 'just to have it', then they stick fx5500 graphics in there cause their money is drying..

The athlon fx-55 only worth it if you have money to get the cpu AND match it with a good graphic card and ram. I have athlon 64 fx-55 and I have not regreted it once. It a GREAT cpu and make my computing experience more enjoyable.

If you cant afford the athlon fx-55 there nothing wrong with the athlon 64 3500+. You will still get a decent gamming experience from the 3500+.
Also the athlon 64 3800+ pretty nice and still a reasonable price.

well

I really wish I could have gone with it.....but I had to settle for less because the old lady wanted a new dining room suit..........part of the married life I suppose
