problem is verrrrry slow boot screen for xp pro, like little bar runs across screen 58 to 60 times instead of usual 10ish and computer gets really slow if more than 3 things open at once, not talking very power hungry things either, i have so far formatted and reloaded 2 times since the virus and not helping matters at all, please if anyone has ideas that can help it would be great. thanks.

Has the CPU lowered in speed, and has the memory size been reduced for some reason? Possible a virus that affected his specific BIOS, and told it to slow down the CPU and disable some memory banks?

Go to Run, and type in dxdiag. Then tell us what it says for CPU speed and available memory.

ok from top

i have saved the whole report if needed. sorry i am only a little above a beginner when it comes to computers.

another little program i have says i have 646 mb of 1024 free with 81% total free memory, even when it is running really slow it still has heaps of free physical ram never going under 300 mb even when encoding movies and video streaming.

I've noticed my computer doing the same every once in a while (booting slow, that is) Usually it's after I tweak something, but not always. At one point I had to go back into the BIOS and save everything to it's default settings and it worked fine - I'd then go back and change everything back to the way I had it and again, it was fine.

You said you've reformatted twice, so I'd guess any kind of software problem is out. How about safe mode? Any luck there?

Maybe run some memory tests on it. I see you posted some memory info - but I've never had any kinds of memory problems so I don't know how any of that information you provided would be effected by bad mem. sticks. Do you have a single 1024 stick or two 512's?

ok just tried safe mode and feeling rather stupid that i hadn't actually thought of trying that myself, she started fine as quick as a 3.2 should!
it is 2 sticks of 512mb DDR400 veritech ram , if it starts fine in safe mode does this mean one of my programs is faulty?

Maybe its a problem with windows? If you're saying its working fine in safe mood, then it might some faulty drivers installed in your system?

On a second note also, if you said it takes a long time to boot, this may be contributed by an overheating cpu. Check all the fans and make sure they're working properply and moving air in the correct direction.

I have 5 80 mm case fans one front under HDD 2 side in line with graphics and cpu and one at back above graphics near cpu and one on top again near cpu, then i also have one fan for psu and the heatsink and fan for cpu itself, all are pushing plenty of air out, i have an old 8 gig that i have just loaded xp with service pack 2 ( i intergrated sp2 with a backup of my xp disk to make it quicker) i might swap HDDs to see if it is slow as well as it doesn't have any other programs at all, should probably load up each program as well to see if i can isolate any problematic programs, would this be a good idea or a large waste of my time?
