im getting a new laptop and i want to run windows xp (vista when it comes out) and a linux version called Ubuntu on two dif partitions. if i opt for the raid 0 (splitting the data) can i do this? or do i have to run one HDD?

First you would need two not partitions for Linux to go on. One is the root partition where all Linux are installed to and the second being a swap partition being used for virtual memory. Usually a 2gb partition is a good size. Once you have Windows(XP/Vista) installed on the first(ntfs) partition you would then proceed to install the ubuntu distro. Then you will need to install the Grub or Lilio boot loader for Linux into the Windows mbr(master boot record).

Linux isn't insistant on the first primary partition on any drive. You can also boot Linux by using a boot disk(floppy-cd) without making any changes to the mbr. If you are new with Linux you want to get familiar by running a live version contained on a cd without any need to install to a drive. You simply boot from the cd with the iso image burned to it.
