Partition/format HD

I have an Acer and the hard drive crashed, so I bought a new one. The original OS was Vista and the original HD was 160 GB. I am trying to use windows XP and the new HD is 250GB.

What do I do to set up the new hard drive? If I put in the recovery disk, it says that I need to partition the HD before I can put anything on it. If I try to load XP first, it says that it can not detect a HD.

Is there something that I am doing wrong? What do I need to do first? Should I just use Vista?
 
Is it an SATA drive? If so, you will need at least XP SP2 or a driver disk to be able to install XP to the hard drive.

Check with Acer for XP drivers too. If you can't find them, that would be a good argument to using Vista instead.
