partition help

I have win xp pro installed on a 400 GB drive and it has One partition so it is useing the whole drive.

Can I make a new partition without re installing win xp pro?

So I can keep win xp pro on the partition it is on and just make a new one you know cut the drive into two parts??????????????

I thought I herd of a way to have win xp do it?

You should be able to do that, yes. XP doesn't have the built in capability to shrink the system partition like Vista or 7 do, so you'll need some sort of utility, to change your partitions around. I personally have an old version of Partition Magic that I use when working with XP, so I don't know if you'd want to purchase something like that, versus using one of the free partitioning utilities available, such as GParted. I haven't used the others, so I'm unsure of their capabilities.

thanks but

Thank God I don't have to re install win xp pro again to get or do a partition.
But just one thing?

The first time you install win xp and make say 1 or 2. partitions and install win xp on one of the partitions win xp writes that Data in the MB and this is how it keeps track of how many partition and things like this you have right?????

But if I already have win xp installed on my drive and it only has one partition on it. When I go to make one more partition without un installing win xp.

Is win xp going to re writ a new MBR?

or what am I not geting

The first action I would take is make a backup to a separate storage device of all your valued data. It would not be good if you messed around with your partitions and ended up messing up your Windows XP operating system.

What is the reason that you want to divide your current partition into two partitions?

thanks but

I want to keep my win xp on one partition and put Ubuntu on the other partition.

But as I have it now win xp is on the drive and it just has one partition. And I don't want to re install win xp just to make two partitions.

And yes I know you are going to tell me just install Wubi LOL.

But because it installs like any win program but yet it gives you a Dual Boot menu I don't think it will be Stable for that long.

And because it will not be installed to it's own partition I don't think I will get the speed and Performance out of it.

So if I can keep my win xp on my drive but use win xp to make another partition that will be good. I wont have to re install win xp.

I just wont to know if I keep win xp on my drive and have it make another partition is it going to re write a new MBR?????????????

I think it does

I would recommend getting Linux Ubuntu 9.10 32-bit operating system. You don't have to modify your partition using a Windows XP DVD to install Ubuntu. Just put the Ubuntu installation DVD in, go thru the installation process and there is a program with Ubuntu that will enable you to modify your partition with Windows XP on it to make room for the Ubuntu operating system.

But I wouldn't go that installation route if I were you. I have Linux Ubuntu and the Windows XP operating systems on my computer. I have two hard drives. One hard drive has Linux Ubuntu, the other drive has Windows XP. I just change the boot priority in my BIOS when I want to switch between operating systems. It only takes me about 20 seconds to do this. It is better than having to share a hard drive with two operating systems in my opinion.

thanks but

I want to istall Ubuntu 64 Bit my cpu is AMD 64 Bit Athlone and my RAM is DDR2 2. GB on 2. Sticks

Win xp only sees 3. GB because it is a 32 Bit os.

Ubuntu will see all 4. GB of ram because it is 64. Bit this is why I want Ubuntu 64 Bit.

And I like having both os on one drive I don't have to go into bios and change boot up and save and exit and then change it back and so on.

Anbd when Ubuntu Installs on the drive and Modifys the partition does it make a new MBR???

Because the MBR is what win xp useses to keep trak of you Sectors and how many partitions you have. And if Ubuntu will be making a new MBR I read that sometimnes win xp may not always see the newq MBR. And this is what tells the os how to load and run???????????????

Ubuntu 9.10 64-bit would be a good option. It will modify the start up files on the hard drive if you install it on the same drive.
It will implant a program called "Grub" that will give you the option to select Linux Ubuntu, Windows or Memtest86+.

I have dual booted this way in the past several times. I don't like it and the reason I do not like it is if you run into problems with an operating system you may have to redo the whole hard drive both Windows and Linux.

If you decide to go that route I hope have a Windows installation disk.
