Partition?

From my understanding, partition will create somewhat of a "virtual computer" on my HDD, allowing me to install multiple OS and applications. If so, what are some good programs that will allow me to do this? Is VMware a partitioning program?

Also I heard partitioning will lower my performance; is this true? If true, to what extent is my performance lowered by? I mainly use my PC for gaming, so I would like to know if this would be a good idea. I currently have Windows Vista Home Premium and I would like to install Windows XP Professional on my "virtual computer"

Hello,

Vmware is not a partitioning program..its a Virtual machine allowing you to run multiple operating systems at the same time without actualy installing it on your main hard drive.

for partitioning software i recoment Norton partiton magic,Its so simple to use and ive never had any problems with it.

Also I heard partitioning will lower my performance; is this true?

well i dont realy see how it could lower performance,I have about 3 partitions on my rig and it hasnt made any differance in speed.

what you have to understand is when you run a virtual machine it uses memory from its host Operating system so for example your host Os would be Vista and you probably would have to allocate 256 or 512Mb of ram for the virtual machine to use for Xp.

i think it would be better to partition your drive and dual boot.

A Partition is really just the begining and end point of a certain amount of space on a drive, either having 1 for the whole drive or more. When you format the partition it has to be a compatible format to what ever OS your going to run,FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS and so on.
