Partitioning and then putting on OS?

I plan on reformatting my HDD. What I want to know is if I can partition my HDD into 2 parts, then put my OS on one side and everything else on the other so my data isn't wiped during the reformatting. Would this work? Ofcourse the registry will change and I will have to reinstall all my programs, but all my pictures and movies will still be there. Would this work?

EDIT: Forgot to mention I am running XP
