Partitioning/booting question

i partitioned my hardrive into two partitions one with windows and one with mepis linux, and when i start up it starts the GRUB program and gives me the option to start mepis or start a memory test, no option to start windows, and i cant figure out how to boot windows. Someone help please.

I believe mepis is ubuntu-based, so this could help...

open your grub boot menu file:

Code:
sudo gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

and look near the bottom of the file for an entry for Windows...this is what mine looks like:

# This entry automatically added by the Debian installer for a non-linux OS
# on /dev/hda1
title Windows XP Professional SP2
root (hd0,0)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader +1

See if you have that type of entry at least. you may be able to recreate it. You would have to know where Windows is installed. Mine is on hd0, partition 0 (which is actually the first partition).

i typed in that code in and all it did was load up mepis differently, keep in mind this is the first time ive ever used linux so i dont entirely know what im doing.

Okay, i don't know what happened because the code I gave should only have opened up the menu.lst file for viewing. I don't know how it loaded differently.

You're best bet would be to go to the Mepis Forums http://www.mepis.org/tracker , and search for dual booting, or post your question there.

I use Ubuntu and I know that their forums are a tremendous help in many areas, so you'd be best posting this with people who use the same distribution you do.

Don't be discouraged by this, either...you'll learn how to fix this, then it will be the next thing, and you'll get over that, and next thing you know, you'll have no problem with the little things.

Good luck to you.

try this to edit it:

Code:
sudo pico /boot/grub/menu.lst

Perhaps you do not have that text editor installed by default. Pico and nano are two bash text editors and will run in the shell.
