partitioning question

is it possible to partition a drive that has no unallocated space without losing all of your data?

i'm running vista 64 bit and my entire 500gb hdd is one allocated partition, so although i'm pretty sure i would have to reinstall windows in order to do this, i just wanted to make sure.

What the hell are you talking about? You can use disk manager right from within Windows Vista to shrink a partition, or you can download a third party partitioning program like Partition Magic and use it to do the same thing.

Typically, when you used to re-partition, yes, you would lose your data. Windows Vista does have a re-partitioning tool, but from my experience doesn't usually work so great. And yes, you can get 3rd party partitioning tools that can help you re-partition without losing your data.

But what I'm saying is the OP wasn't asking if repartitioning the entire drive would erase everything. He was basically saying he wanted to create a new partition without losing anything which would be easiest done with what I stated before.
 
yea all you need to do is shrink the original partion, unfortunatly when i tried to do that my pc froze so it screwed up my original partition. i was able to recover my files though.
