Hi folks,
I have just replaced my hard drive to 80 GB. BIOS is detecting new hardware. I tried to partition using win 98 bootable cd. I made all partitions from primary to logocal but It fails to install operating system. When I delete all partitions and directly start making partitions from win xp bootable cd, I can't choose partition size for primary partition or C:. What I'm trying to do is I want 50% for C: drive and 50% for D drive:, but C: drive is already having 99% of space of 80 GB. I can't change or adjust any size...

pliz help

you dont need to use a 98 cd

the XP cd itself has a partitioner and formatter during the blue-screen phase of it

why not?

you know that in the 98 cd after you delete a partition you have to reboot before making a new one right?

Yes you can. It sounds like you're just pressing Enter to use all the available space and Install Windows in one fell swoop. Read through the Partitioning screen - it will tell you how to create partitions of specific sizes. Just remember, 1 GB is 1024 MB, not 1000 (just in case you're super anal-retentive/OCD like me).

Start by deleting all your partitions. Once you have a single Raw space, press C to Create a new partition. Follow the instructions and give it 40,960 MB of space. Once it's created, you'll see C: and Unpartitioned space. Move to the Unpartitioned space and press C again to Create another. Use the remaining space and follow the instructions. Now you'll see both C: and D:. Move to C: and press Enter - Windows starts to Install and you can eat cake.

Follow the instructions and give it 40,960 MB of space.

Default is 81912 MB rest 8 MB is for logical drive and I can't change it to any number. When I try to create logical drive it is too small space to create D: drive. That's the basic problem.
Do I have to press any special key or just to enter number?

Yes, Default will use the entire amount of Drive space, save for 8 MB. That's why you need to press C instead of Enter. When you get to the Partitioning stage, read everything over, then press C. You're probably going too quickly or skipping a step - it does work.

You went one step too far. you need to delete existing partition and repartition. Read instructions carefully. When you try to make the first partition, the whole drive size is listed as default, just change it to whatever size you want. Then keep creating partitions from balance of drive. You can't do anything with the 8mb partition.

Really imsati...i was going too quickly and even skipping a step. Damn.....keyboard "num lock" was not on....that's why i was not able to change any numbers. You know dude I'm an impatient kinda person. It was just because of over confidence and impatience....However, I have successfully created all partitions and win xp is rocking...Thanks Imsati and all those who helped.

Glad you got it worked out. Never be afraid to ask about things like that; even though it may seem plain and simple, a lot of times clarification is needed. We've all been there at some point, too:) Enjoy the partitions!
