How or when is there unallocated space in my HDD? the 100gb hdd i have now has no unallocated space. so would i have to go get a new hdd, then partition that one right away? the reason i ask is that i want to put another OS on my pc, but i need to partition a hdd, so do i need to go get a new hdd and then partition it right away before nething is stored on there? thanks for the help.

YEa, if you get a new hdd you need to format it then you can use it as a slave/master hdd.
EDIT: Unallocated space is space on your hdd that isnt formated. You dont need a new hdd to install a second os btw. you can create a seperate partition on your hdd but you would lose everything on your hdd and have to reinstall and OS.

typically the easiest way to allocate your partitions is when you install XP, it will let you select a partition size, make that partition, and leave you with unallocated space for another partition assuming you chose a size that would allow that. When you get a new hard drive, you will have to format it before using it, and partitioning would be a good idea too I think if it is somewhat large. I'm not sure if this answers all your questions though
EDIT: wow, three responses in one minute, is that some sort of new record?
