Partitions?

My hdd right now has 2 partitions. Long story short, 1 partition has an old OS and the other has the new one, both windows 7. I didnt install the new one over the old one because I wanted to dualboot so that i can transfer data from the old to the new before reformatting the old partition.
Im looking at the a partition manager and this is what i see:
(Old partition) D: System Primary
(New Partition) C: Boot Logical
Question is, is it safe to reformat the old partition? Im asking because the last time I did something like that, somehow, I could not boot anymore. Apparently, there were some files related to boot device that was installed on the old partition.
EDIT: Also, I cant seem to format the D partition.
EDIT 2: I just started using win 7 64bit for the first time. How come there's Program Files and Program Files x86? Which do i install in?

You should be able to format the D: partition without effecting the C: but my recommendation before doing something like that would be to do a full system image backup so if, by some chance, something goes wrong you can restore everything back to its original state.

Need more info regarding why you say you can't format the D: partition. How are you trying to do it and what messages are you getting?

On Win 7 64-bit, \Program Files is where 64-bit apps are installed and \Program Files (x86) is where 32-bit applications are installed.

thanks for the reply. there was some mixup with how i installed the new OS. After trying to make it a primary partition with many partition softwares but it didnt work, so i reinstalled the damn thing. because it's a new OS, there was nothing to back up, just a lot of hassle trying to reinstall like 20 programs :X
