Parts Compatability: What to look for?

Hey everyone,
I'm in the process of putting together a shopping list for my first self-built desktop computer. I have a list here that I've already put together but I'm still a little sketchy on what exactly I should be looking for.
Mostly I put this together based entirely off reviews and combo deals from Newegg.com. My question is what kinds of things should I be looking for when it comes to parts compatability. Such as what kind of power supply would such-and-such processor need and how much cooling; or would y video card be wasted on x processor etc.
This is what I've put together so far. Mostly I'm just looking to put together a good solid desktop for mid to high level gaming with the ability to upgrade down the line. My budget is $1000-$1300. The total for the parts listed so far is $735.00 I'm a bit unsure about the video card and what kind of things to look for. Also just wondering if I was missing anything else on this list for a complete build excluding the monitor and OS.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Looks pretty good. I like the Corsair PSU and the WD Black HDD. A case is really a personal preference thing so I don't usually try to change somebody's mind about a case. For motherboards I usually stick with Gigabyte or ASUS, though the customer rating looks OK on that MSI board. I'd also go ahead and get a good CPU cooler.

For a GPU, I'd pair it with a Sapphire 5870 if the budget allows, or perhaps a 5850 for a little less.

Save 20 bucks and get the 955, will clock just as well as the 965.

If you overclock, get Phenom II 955. if not, just stay with 965

Video card - 5850.

case - I honestly don't know the difference between CM690 II Basic and CM690 II Advanced. but the basic version is $20 cheapper.
Althernatively, consider HAF 922 if you want to install aftermarket heatsin. It is wider than CM690 II.
