passive cooling a p4

Hey peeps, building myself a media center, figured best thing to do is upgrade my current rig and use the cpu to build my new media center.

Since silent running is key does anyone have experience running a p4 (northwood, as in my sig) passivley. Will the Zalman CNPS6500B-ALCU do the job

Any thoughts?

It will keep it reasonably cool while idling, I'd expect something around 40-45 deg. An XP-120 heatsink might be something to look at.

the more I think about it, you could even use the stock cooler, unplug the fan and underclock it as low as it'll go. Playing media doesn't exactly require high speed CPUs.

yeah i thought of that, but i dont actually have the stock fan. And i was thinking of using my Zalman CNPS7700-CU on the amd 64+. So i would have needed another hsf. I will be ocing the amd when i get it and feel that the zalman will be a better hsf then stock.

Although stock is pretty good on the amd 64s so i suppose i could stick with stock on the new chip and use my zalman on my p4 and down clock it i suppose. hmmmm

well the question is redundent know.

I changed my plans due to budget constraints, going to build media center cheaper and keep existing system :(

Will pick up a celeron D 335, Asus p4v8x-x.
I will still be running the celeron passively. Biggest part of budget is going on the psu, want a silent one so looking at the Silentmaxx Semi-Fanless.
Will stick in 1-2 120mm fans. These will be only fans running. Should be quiet as a mouse.

Antec makes a fairly good fanless PSU called Phantom, it doesn't like being at full load but a media PC shouldn't cause that

he he great minds think alike, i just ordered the phantom 350w (it worked out cheaper than the silentmaxx and had good reviews). Should be plenty, it has 34amp on the 12v rails. Fairly sure the celeron 335 wont tax that.

Now i have to tackle the compatabilty issues around mce 2005.

Thanks for the help cromewell.
