Password invasion

Hi there I'm really glad I found this site and hope someone can help me.
I'll like to forego personal details of why this happened to me - however
my concern over it won't make much sense if I don't. I know for a fact
my now "ex girlfriend" obtained my password to my email...to find exactly
what she was looking for. She sent me the inbox of my email, and then
sent me an email I had sent to someone else, so I am not guessing here.
After a long discussion she told me that she went to a website on the net
where she put in the information of my email address and they told her
she didn't have to pay until she was satisfied that it was the password.
She tried the password and it let her into my account. Question,
how on earth can these companies advertise online that they will perform
something illegal and actually get paid for it without being busted.
I have tried to contact the company that is listed on her credit card
transactions, although she said it was the company that took her
credit card and sent her an email thanking her for her payment, when she
replied to it, she received a mailer demon -there is no such address.
Do I have any recourse against this company. Can they be traced,
and hopefully reported. As well, as an idiotic a deed for her to do,
she worries the company could access information on her computer.
Many thanks to all that reply.

The thing is their adverts aren't illegal, and their job isn't illegal in the eyes of the law.
They get space on internet because they pay for it, however, they shouldn't use porn,hacks....etc etc on their sites.
Now, what your ex GF did, could easily be a password recovery, like, she's lost her password and she paid to get her back. She did know sth about your e-mail so if you somehow find on court, you sued them, they have like 10 reasons why was that job legal.
So, you can't win ths one , sorry.

Thanks for you info...okay I get it now, she could have been asking for a password
that belonged to say her husband...tricky way around it for them but it works, they don't know anything for the reason. As for her doing this, seeing it's illegal, can't I report her to the police for doing this? I heard from someone that if a person really
wanted to sue for harrassment caused by her sending out this email, that ip providers have logs and they would show she went to this site and hired them. But then someone said I'd have to go to a lawyer, he'd have to get a warrant to confiscate her computer
and search her hardrive, cause she's deleted everything, receipts etc. I guess my
basic question is do you think these hackers protect themselves not to be traced?
Thanks again, Stephne

Computer crashed...recover data

I lost several emails in my in box, there are not where to be found on my entire system--well that I can see or find anyway. I conntacted my provider....ended up speaking to 4 different technical support people and got 4 different answers:
1) no way to retrieve the emails...lost forever
2) yes they can retrieve them as long as it is within 30 days of sending or receiving them
3) all info of my entire account is on their server but they can't release
this information.
4) last guy said he'd send them all to me within 30 minutes..it's been over 24 hours.
Are any of these answers close???

I also had data that is now not on my hard drive, family pictures, music etc.
important documents again that I cannot see or find. I heard if I took my computer to a computer specialist they could retrieve the lost data.

I appreciate any response or suggestions. Thanks

Yes, they can retrieve it but it's expensive. Btw, password crackers protect them with Terms of usage and policy because they can say on court they do legal job, but aswell to avoid any sh*t they use proxy i can bet. And what's new, you are responsible for giving them your personal data like mail address. You will be responsible although your ex-GF did it. I suggest you retrieve data if it's sth necessery and then change your mail address and/or password.

hi gamemaster

Thanks for all your info, I will follow your advice. I was able to retrieve
an email from these guys (sorry as you can tell, I'm sorely ignorant about
computers but that's why I joined this forum. I looked under properties
for the info - totally different display then I've ever seen before:
Protocal - Hypertext transfer protocol
Type not available; connnection not encrypted, created/modified not available, http://buy134w.buy.mail.live.com.mail. I'm gathering overall
it's very difficult to trace emails period so maybe I shouldn't be so paranoid.
My gf even called her credit card company to get info re the billing
and they said if you look at your charge for it, the number next to it
is who she paid. We called and it was paypal.....so at this point I figure
I am unable to track this company unless I want to pay big bucks for it.
Thanks again for you help, I really appreciate it. You are the MASTER!!!!
