I'm looking for a program that will password protect files/folders on any media (discs/drives w/e) without having to be installed on the system reading it. Any thoughts?? I'm running XP Pro, is there anything like that in there already? thanx

no, there is nothing built into windows XP that will password encrypt files. I have not yet found a dedicated program to do this but if you put the files into a folder then zip the folder up using WinZip the im pretty certain that there is an option to password protect the ZIP archive, this means the files can't be extracted without entering the password first.

PCWORLD discusss this here: http://www.pcworld.com/howto/article/0,aid,110663,00.asp

yea that does work, ive tried it with winzip

get folder guard or folder password expert. i think it'll do exactly as u say.. password protect them.. when trying to open.. it prompts for a password.. wont allow anything done to it from safe mode, command prompt.. etc.. if you really need it.. invest in it.. i belive one of them have a 1 year money back guarantee or somethin'.. but u can always "hide" the folder.. most users dont even know about that option or nor will that option come to mind when browsing through ur computer.. gL

i have folder guard pro xp and it does just fine but it has to be installed on the system to protect anything, so if i encrypt a flash drive or something and plug it into another computer the password will not be in effect. its not a big deal but i was looking for something that would do that. otherwise yea i think folder guard is great! havent checked out folder password though ill give it a try.
