PC Boot Problem

Hey guys... Was just surfing around looking for some helpful information and came across this forum. Hopefully someone can help me here.

Here's the problem.

I built a new PC from the ground up. EVERYTHING is new and ready to boot up (or so I thought.) I plugged in my monitor and my pc. When I press the power button, it goes on for about 2 seconds, the lights light up and then it shuts down.. Nothing comes up on the monitor.

Also... All 3 fans go on for about 2 seconds as well. Then everything just shuts down. The mobo light is on.

Does anyone know what issues could cause this?

Thanks!

LF

when a BIOS jumper is set to the clear position, the fans won't even spin. It will appear dead. I haven't seen a board ship like that since the PC Chips days.

What about grounding? Check no stand-offs on the case are touching the motherboard because the system will work for a couple of seconds then stop.

stand-offs? Not sure what they are..

Power supply. Change it. Had the same thing happen with a brand new computer two days ago.

I guess before I run out and buy a new one, I should just swap it out with one from another PC?

BTW... The ps is an Antec Truepower 2.0 430 watt..

Thanks!

I would try other things before going to the extreme of changing the power supply.

i would first be sure all the memory and the cpu heatsink is seated correctly. Then reassure that the standoffs are placed correctly and that the case is not touching the case. If all that fails, try one stick of ram at a time. Last but not least, you can try a different power supply.

leatherface here said that he's not sure of what standoffs are. Maybe someone would be so nice as to provide him (and me!) with a bit of clarification....?

These are the stand offs, they should come with the case. You should place them accordingly to the the motherboard layout.

all are very good suggestions.

i too suspect the standoffs. make sure they're DIRECTLY under the 6 holes you use to screw on the mobo to the case. the motherboard would have grounding material around these holes. if the holes don't have the grounding material then be sure to use the spacers to sandwich the motherboard and screws

since you'll have the motherboard out to check the standoffs i would also check to see if the cpu heatsink/fan pushpins went through the motherboard (i'm assuming you're using socket 775)

ok... I don't mean to double-post, but my last post was 2 days ago and I would rather not just edit it.

There was a small red switch on the back of the ps that I messed around with and now everything is running (not that I made the right adjustments, but it doesn't shut down after 2 seconds now). The power light on the front of the tower is not lighting up, but I can't remember if it did before. I hooked up a mouse, keyboard and monitor and when I boot up, the keyboard does not light up and nothing shows up on the monitor. The mb light is on and all fans are running. I understand this is my first build, but is it typically this troublesome or am I just troublesome?? :)

btw... I removed the mb and checked all stand-offs. There were actually a few more I should have added and did.

Also, could it be the ps is not powerful enough?

Here are a few photos of my creation (I understand it's nothing spectacular and just added the last because it looked cool!):

what country do you reside in?

OK... well I kinda figured my ps should stay on 115v (which is where it was to begin with) and I am back where I started from. The PC shuts down after about 2 seconds. Now I disconnected the ps from the mobo. When I turn on the ps, should the fan on the ps go on? or does it only go on when connected to the mobo? It doesn't go on in my situation. I am starting to lean towards a bad ps and may just go purchase a new one.

Anyone have any more suggestions?

I want to thank everyone in advance for their time and effort in trying to help me out. Hopefully this thing comes to a happy ending real soon! :)
