PC Desktop Shutoff While Using, Won't Power Up Now..??

Hey Everyone,

Great to be here although not under pleasant circumstances. :)

My computer is 1.5 years old. I had it custom-built for my studio. The components are as follow:

Windows 8
Intel 3770 3,4 Ghz 4-core i7
32 GB Ram
Nvidia GeForce GTX 660 Ti
256 GB SSD
Corsair Power
Corsair Case
5 fans, liquid cooling

Let me know if anyone needs added specs.

It has run flawlessly since I got it. Turned it on today, was working fine, sounded fine, and suddenly it shutoff while I was on the internet. No warning at all. As if there was a power outage but of course there wasn't.

I have a surge protector which was still on. My monitor and speakers are still getting power but just in case, I unplugged the tower and tried a different working outlet. Still nothing.

On the inside, there is a green light that is always on, regardless if the computer is powered up or shutdown. It is still on, so it's getting power from someplace.

I am at a loss as to what the problem might be. Power supply? Motherboard?

I don't know if this is related but I may as well put it out there. I recently had to send a pair of powered studio monitors back for warranty repair. Each has it's own amplifier inside.

The first one died in April. While I was using it, it just shutoff and would't power back up. The second one died in May in the exact same way. Just turned off, and wouldn't power back up. Now my computer tower. That is a very strange coincidence.

Any suggestions or advice? How can I test the power supply? Could this be an electrical problem? I live in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada...if anyone is close, can you recommend a good place to take it in, if the problem can't be found?

Thank you very much.

Unplug power from power supply, remove the cmos battery that is on the motherboard, press and hold the power button on the case for 10 seconds, then wait 10 minutes. Then reinsert battery and reconnect power cord and try booting up.

Ok, that worked! Computer booted fine and I reset the bios. Thanks so much John!

My next question is what might have caused that and can I expect the same thing to happen again soon?

If it does happen again, should I just repeat the procedure and then take it in to get looked at some place?

Thanks.

Hey,

So it's two days later and after the machine running perfectly fine for 16 hours, it now again will not turn on. I repeated the above procedure but this time it did nothing. Still no power.

Should I be certain that it is the power supply that is the problem? I don't really want to drop $180 on a new power supply if that isn't the problem.

Could it be the motherboard (Asus P8Z77-V LK)? There is a green light on, that is located on the motherboard and it's been on since this first occurred, however I never noticed before this if it was always on. I'm pretty sure the answer is No. I only ever noticed the green light on the graphics card being on before.

Could it be the CPU?

Should I just take it in some place and have a repairman look at it?

I'm pretty broke right now so I would rather be able to troubleshoot it myself. Any suggestions?

Thanks.

Have you looked at some of the steps I outlined in my guide? http://www.computerforum.com/209946-tech-guide-diagnosing-pc-will-not-post-start.html

It could be the power supply or the motherboard. What I would recommend you do is remove the board from the case and try and run it on a piece of cardboard or a wooden desk or something. This will tell you if the board is shorting on the case or not. You may have a standoff that is missing or is shorting the board.

I would also try using the PSU in another system if you can, or borrow another PSU temporarily to see if you can boot your PC.

I would very much doubt it's the CPU - they don't tend to go wrong and cause problems like this.

More steps you can take and more detailed instructions are in the guide. Get back to us on this.
