PC Doing Nothing at Startup

1 in 5 times of starting up my PC it will get to the logon screen, i will whack my password in and it will display "Welcome" and the rotating wheel for 5 minutes to the point that i have to hold the power button down and boot up again. It happened today where the mouse appeared with a all black background and it went no further that that. when this happens the hard drive light will blink in a pattern what could be wrong?
 
See if you can boot to safe mode and do a disk check on the hard drive. If not, boot to the install cd and run recovery console to run disk check.
 
If you can boot to safe mode, then right click on the "c" drive or wherever windows is installed and click on properties, click on tools tab, click check now.
 
It might, or might not. We can only offer suggestions, we don't know for sure if it will fix it. Computers are tricky sometimes.
