PC eats hard drives

I am putting together an old AMD K6 machine for my neighbour out of parts. He gave me a 40gb ide to install. While I was configuring the master/slave settings, the PC refused to recognize the drive and I noticed smoke coming from it. OK it was toast.
I pulled a 10GB from my machine and tried that. After a few reboots, same trouble--smoke and dead drive.

I ckecked the PS, giving ok voltages...the only thing I might have done wrong is screwup master/slave/CS jumpers...would that fry a hard drive or is something else wrong here?
I am afraid to buy a new drive to put in

sounds like a bad molex, try switching the PSU just in case, it might be surging

I would start with the PSU first aswell.

mine did that to a poor little 4gb hard-disk... poor little thing never had a chance
