Pc freezes every minute or so

This is extremely irritating. I am on a friends computer who is letting me "test it out" before I buy this. The damn thing locks up literally every 1-3 minutes for about 1 minute or so. It locks up no matter what I am doing (typing,watching videos,playing games, surfing the web). The machine just had a new graphics card put in and was recently upgraded to Windows 7. Now I did notice that when it locks up the little light on the tower for the desktop is illuminates so I know the hard drive is doing something. I have about 40 gigs of free space on it so I cannot imagine that is the problem.

I am running a defrag now but I doubt that will make a difference

Please someone help?
 
If the hard drive is active while it freezing I'm guessing you may have errors on your drive and you need to run a disk check on it or run a manufacturers drive diagnostic on it.

Or you may be infected and need to run some scans.

Does it freeze in safe mode?
