PC have 5300 ram, 8400 lying around

I honestly have no idea what those numbers mean, but I've got an easy question for you guys.

I have an old machine with 2x256mb 240 pin 5300 ram. I have 2x1gb 240 pin 8400 lying around that I'd like to put in the old machine.

Am I able too? Will it work fine, and just operate at 5300 (whatever that means)?
