Im an A+ certified tech, and always take my time, and i built my friend a pc. and it keeps having issues. well just one issue. I built his with same parts i got for mine except the tower, and mine never did this. His will randomly shut off when using. but when using speedfan it shows the cpu is at steady 30-36c and the tower and an temps all stay ay like 30-34c. and all the ram is good and plugged in right. and everything is put in right.

specs.

core 2 duo 2.2ghz
cheap raidmax $25 black tower
geforce 8600gt 256mb ddr3
80gb hd
msi Nforce motherboard
Artic cooler heatsink and fan for cpu
x3 120mm fans and x2 80mm
2gb g.skill ram

any ideas

80% of the time random shutdowns are a weak P/S or a screwed up driver. Video cards or memory most of the time but no always will give you lockups or errors.

No 580 should be fine. When I said weak I meant going bad. If he can swap out P/Ss with someone to see what happens and update his drivers.

i just reinstalled his windows. the only driver problems i can see is the geforce onboard 7 series vid is installed with the geforce 8600gt. but the power supply is new? everything in the comp except hd is new.

Well I would probably try another P/S to test it before getting another one or sending it back. Since its a new system and I guess it has been doing it since built, it could be a screwy board or any number of things. Could be something simple like not plugging in the 4 pin CPU power connector. I use to have a Abit board that if you installed XP SP2 on it, it would just restart at random. Turns out it was just a IDE driver conflict.

I doubt it's the power supply, possible but doubt it. A good way to find out what's causing the issue is to find out the very last thing he did when the issue occurred. Tell him to note this, and write it down on paper every time it shuts off. Randomly shutting off (hopefully you really meant the computer shuts down, and not restarting), does that mean when it's left on idle it shuts off? or when he's running applications that taxes the CPU? (video, games, etc). When you mentioned different towers, are they the same form factors? does the new case have good air circulation?

Check CMOS to see if the motherboard has a certain temperature limit prior to shutting down to prevent overheating. I believe this is a heating issue more than anything. The best thing to do is when the computer shuts off, turn it back on and go right to CMOS, check the temperature then, if the cpu temp is hotter than normal, it's a heating issue.

alright it mostly shuts of when he plays world of warcraft. The Tower is well venilated. Mine was an Aspire Jupitur one of the expensive one with the big ass fan covering the side door. and I used on back fan and used the stock heatsink for my core to duo, his needed a heatsink, which brought it down, and has 3 120 fans and 2 80mm fans. maybe is the mother board settings like u said. it just shuts off not restarts my bad.

If it's a heating issue, games will definitely do it. I believe you should be able to view the temperature from CMOS. If you can show him how to do this it might help you. Whenever the computer shuts off, ask him to immediately check the cpu temperature from the CMOS, and write that down. By the way, is he able to turn the computer back on right away? or he has to wait a little before turning it back on.

sometimes it takes a minute, most of the time it goes back on. also he uses speedfan and it shows everything is cool. so i dk i will have him check cmos, it did it this morning, hasnt done it again.

it does sound like a psu issue i once had. weather you have a high quality psu or not there is always one in a bunch that is faulty. Try swapping it out with another just to remove it from suspition. Anoter possible explenation is that you could have a faulty power switch. I know it sounds rediculus but I ave had it happen to me wit a ceap case, were a loosly soldered wire to the power button would casue the power to switc off, especial when I was gaming because of the subwoofer attaced to my pc.
