PC Keeps Freezing

Hi,

I purchased a PC about 2 months ago and have been having problems with it freezing frequently. any problems and then it can happen twice in 10 minutes. It seems completely random!

I've done a quick remake of what happens when it freezes (the pic below), it's like a deck of cards rolling down the screen in whatever colour the screen was at the time of the crash.

I was using word at the time of one of the crashes and used the save shorcut to see if i could save it, but it didnt work so the pc obviously freezes not just graphically.

Sorry for the lack of technical terms.

I've not tried re-installing the operating system yet and plan to do it this weekend.

Anyone have any suggestions of what the problem may be?
 
That happens when you cpu, ram, or vid card is maxxed out. Open task manager (ctrl+alt+del) and see what is using the most memory and cpu. Also have the task manager open when that happens and see if you ram (page file) or cpu is near 100%. If so then your pc is prob infected.

  • Click on "Do a system Scan Only"
  • Click on "save log"
  • A notepad window will open
  • Hit Ctrl + A
  • Copy + paste in a forum reply

Before you go off running HJT, give us a bit more background info. The link you listed timed-out for me, so I'm not certain of the specs - could you possibly list them please? Also, did you system have Windows installed on it already, or did you put a copy on? Were the problems there from the beginning, or did they show up after you had it for a few weeks? Do you recall downloading or changing *anything* just before the symptoms started?
 
LOL I just looked at that link and that pc isnt that great. It says 8ghz in the title and thats not true!! It's only a AMD 64x2 4000. Also, the graphics is only a 6100 which is integrated and not even 256mb like it says. It's only 128mb I believe.

Man they ripped you off. How much in US is that?

Yeah i agree, that was a really crap buy!
 
Link's working for me now. Sadly, yeah, you might have been ripped off - I loath people who put crap like that on ebay for un-suspecting buyers; they really need to be shot. Personally, I'd wipe the Hard Drive clean and do a fresh install (Buy a copy of XP if you need to) - the Seller obviously had zero integrity to begin with, so there's no telling what else is on the system (virus, trojans, other random nasties/bad mojo).
 
^^ Exactly I was just going to recommend doing that also. Who knows they could have put a keylogger on there.

This is caused,when some RAM or cpu or video card has had a bad time and can lead to serious errors.
I tend to when it happens leave the computer off for about half an hour with the RAM taken out so it can clear.
