PC keeps shutting down when it wants to

My PC keeps shutting down for no aparent reason all the time everyday. I think it might be some sort of virus but I really have nothing to back that up with. When it shuts down the only way I can turn it back on is to turn off the surge protector its plugged into, then wait a few min. then turn it back on. At first it was only happening later at night around midnight. But now it seems to do it all the time. Few times a day. After turning the surge protector off and then on, usually I need to let the thing sit for a few minutes then it will turn back on. Sometimes when I start the PC back up again, within 10 sec of pushing on, it shuts right down again. Then it usually comes on and works. COULD THIS BE VIRUS? IF SO HOW CAN I REMEDY THIS? MY VIRUS SCANS DONT PICK UP ON ANYTHING. PLEASE HELP.

i kind of doubt it's a virus based on the fact that you have to reset your power strip to get it to come back on. I think maybe it's a problem with your power supply. You could try a different power supply and see if that fixes it.

Power Supply Issue Had Crossed My Mind

I had to replace the original power supply a year ago, either it blew out and fried my graphics card too or the other way around. The one I bought to replace it was a higher powered one than was in it, and it is very loud. So i guess it could be the power source. I dont want to have to buy another one but I dont know what else it could be. Could I have any other problems that would be causing this malfunction.

i'm not sure of anything else that would cause something like that, what i'd do is borrow a power supply out of another computer somewhere and test it to see if it still does it, if it doesn't still do it then it must have been the power supply. I didn't mean you should just go out and buy a new one.
