PC not recognizing DVD Drive

I bought a gateway yesterday with Windows 7 already installed. It worked great for a day but now it won't recognize my CD/DVD drive. If I go into My Computer it's not there. If I go into boot menu at start up its available as a boot option. Any ideas on how to fix this? I would like to fix it myself before I spend an hour on the phone with useless "tech support" people.

I am having the very same problem on my laptop . I use xp media center expansion pack 3. So obviously I,ll be very interested in how to find a fix

I went to this site. I did what it says It took me to the registry editer, but rather then the whole string that i should have seen all I got was a small list on the sidethat didn,t take me to the filter upper or lower. Did I go to the wrong place?

You can also download the microsoft fix it tool that was on that page and see if that works for you instead of editing the registry.

That was the very 1st thing I tried. It came up with the same results that I did. Now I am a little confused as to why the Microsoft site would tell me to go to the registry site that doesn,t even have the info they said would be there.

I even tried with an external cd/dvd drive. It installed all the drivers properly but it still will not recognize it in my computer or play anything that is put into it.

Then most likely you will need to do a fresh install of windows after you back up all your important data.

I did a complete system restore and it recognized my dvd rom drive for about 2 days and then it stopped.
Is a fresh windows install different from a complete factory system restore?

You most likely need to do a destructive restore by totally reformatting the drive. I really don't trust those manufacturer recovery procedures.

How do I do a destructive restore and will the 3 dvd's I burned for system restore when I first got the pc install everything back or should I just buy a fresh copy of windows 7?
