PC Problem - Spyware ? - Hijack Log now posted (help!)

I am having big problems with my PC and think I may have been hit by spyware or a virus. When I boot up it is reporting that a number of applications are not running correctly (SKYPE, Google Desktop etc) and if I try to launch a browser it just flashes for a second and then nothing. This also happens in safe mode. I have seen some advice on forums to run spyware tools etc but I cannot get access to these due to the browser not starting.

Any ideas .. I really want to avoid rebuilding the PC if possible. I have McAfee installed on PC but this also will not start.

Seeming as though you have acess to the internet from another computer, please go to Important: Please read before posting and download Malwarebytes' and HiJackThis into a flash drive if possible, if not possible please download them and burn them onto a CD.

I recommend burning them to a CD as a flash drive may get infected when plugged into the problematic computer, also please save or print out the instructions so that you will be able to follow them properly.

After doing all the suggested step in the sticky please post how your computer is behaving, along with the Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware log and the HiJackThis log. :)
 
Many thanks, i will need to try this when i can get access to a PC with USB or CD drive. Currently posting on forum without either facility. I assume that there is no further investigation worth carrying out on the original PC beforehand ?

Those are the basic tools, so no investigations beforehand.
 
Malware install not working

Hi, have tried to run the Malware install today but, firstly the PC would not let any copy / paste activity happen so I ran the install from CD and followed the prompts.

However I then got a message saying Run Time Error 372. Failed to load VbalGrid from Vbalsgrid6.ocx. The version of Vbalsgrid6.ocx may be outdated.

Any ideas ?
 
Was the install directory set to your hard drive or the cd drive?

Please make sure it's set to (C:\) or your drive letter C:\ is the default.
 
If I reduce the path to C:\ it comes back with you must supply a full path. If I put the path to C:\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware it has the same run time error as before
 
Well only one suggestion.

Try making the path C:\huh

or replace huh with whatever as the virus may be stopping it by using keywords.

I have however contacted john who is quite knowledgeable in the subject so if that doesn't work he should be able to help. :)
 
Hi, I tried with Huh as suggested but get same runtime error at the end of installation. Appreciate the ongoing help with this, really hopeful I can avoid a rebuild.

Hi, still not able to do anything on the PC :( are there any other suggestions or does it look like I am in the rebuild game ?

Your problem could be a couple different things. Vbalsgrid6.ocx file belongs to a program that possbly needs to be reregistered. I have searched google for you with that filename in hopes of one of the hits will hlep you determine what is wrong. Here is the search....

Some of those hits do refer to the Malwarebytes program. Have you tried running Superantispyware located here... http://www.superantispyware.com/downloadfile.html?productid=SUPERANTISPYWAREFREE
 
Really appreciate the help with this. I will download the superantispyware to CD and try running that on the infected PC. The function of the PC is severely limited now and although it boots up into Windows, hardly anything will run.

Is it common for spyware / malware etc to infect to the level that it can even stop the PC copying files from CD ?

I now have copies of SpyBot, STOPzilla, Super AntiSpyware and HJT on a CD ready to try on my PC. Would anyone recommend which of these is best to use ?
 
My recommendations are Superantispyware and Malwarebytes Antimalware. Since you can't get the malwarebytes program to run, try Superantispyware. Just make sure you fully update it before running it.
 
Depending on how bad you are infected will determine if it will update or not. Opening a browser is not necessary.
 
Tried superantispyware

But kept getting message 'the administrator has set policies to stop this application being installed'.

Have managed to go to DOS and copy HJT and got the following log .. however not sure how much more it will let me do as it then stopped responding
