PC switching from fast to slow performance

Hi, I am a guy desperately trying to fix up my PC, which I recently put together.

The problem is, that sometimes my computer will run terribly slow (It's unimagenable slow, like opening my web browser takes 10 seconds. Everything freezes EXCEPT for the mouse, which I can still move around freely), and then sometimes (an entire night for example) it will run, like it should, extremely fast (playing COD:MW2 on highest graphical settings).

The specs are:

MB: Asrock 870 EXTREME3
CPU: AMD Phenom II x4 965 Black 3.4GHz 125W
GPU: Radeon 5770HD
RAM: 4 X Kingston 2GB DDR3 Hyper x 1600MHz
HDD: 1,5tb 6400rpm I think
CPU cooler: Zalman CNPS10X PERFORMA
OS: Windows XP 64 bit

I have average computer knowledge, and I have tried some stuff already.

I thought it was the CPU overheating. But then I installed a new cooler and it was the same. Also, my computer is slow from the very start, even when loading Windows.

I have absolutely no idea of what it is, because as said it's only sometimes, and I have just done a fresh install of Windows XP. My main idea is that it's something with the RAM compatability with my MB, but I am by no means sure.

I am starting to doubt how wise my decision of building my own desktop was, but I just could not stand for the money I am saving.

First of all, I excuse if this problem has been answered before. But it is very hard to search for this specific problem, because in most cases, it's just some software related problem (if you catch my drift).

Second of all, I'm sorry for my mediocre English and hope that you will understand it anyway.

Otherwise, thanks for reading and I am grateful for any help you can give me :)

I know windows XP 64bit supposedly had driver issues with some hardware. If I were you, I would get a copy of windows 7 64 bit and see if performance is normal. You are using a genuine copy of the operating system?

With it being a fresh install, I'm guessing its definately hardware related.

I bought Windows 7 64 bit to use with the computer originally, with the same performance issues. I just installed XP 64 bit to test if it was windows 7 that was the problem.

I would run a diagnostic on your hard drive to see if it has any errors possibly, what brand is it?

Hi again.

My HDD is a SAMSUNG HD154UI, how do I run a diagnostic ;)?

And I just remembered - I think the only drivers installed on the PC, is my GPU driver and ethernet. Can that be a problem?

Thanks

Look in device manager and see if there are any devices with yellow question marks on them. Missing drivers such as the chipset driver will cause some issues with your system. And even if windows installed generic drivers for your hardware, you should download the correct driver from the motherboard/computer manufacturer.

Can you give us a screen shot of your device manager?

Alright so I've downloaded the stuff you linked, and it did not help a bit, after the installment.

Just to clarify how slow my computer is I can tell you that I started to install the AMD all in one package like 10 minutes after you posted, and it has just finished now :/

How do I do a disk diagnostic :)?

thanks
