Pc to lcd help please

Hi guy’s I’m new to this forum decided to register to join you community for some advice and hopely give advice on anything i can help with also. I have a computing back ground which isn’t the greatest but is enough to do a fair amount of work with PC’s.

I’v been trying to sort this out for a while now but its just been left and forgot about cause I’m not too sure how to go about it. Im trying to get my PC running on my LCD TV which is a Toshiba AV50 42 inch which has 2 HDMI ports, two scart, some video and sound phono ports also. My PC has a MSI FX5200 graphics card in it which has S-Video and DVI-D ports.

I have tried the using a S-video connection which had a really bad quality image (similar to an old Sega drive console lol) i also purchased a HDMI to DVI-D cable which worked but yet again the quality was bad and i couldn’t get it to run a clone on both screens (monitor and LCD TV).

So my question is can i use the DVI-D to HDMI to get a better picture using certain software or would i need to upgrade my graphics card to a HDMI supporting card? Would i get a decent picture quality?

Any advice would be appreciated.

I don't believe you'll have any success getting a good picture with that video card, you will probably have to upgrade that. What are your system specs and we can recommend some cards that will work?

Thanks for the reply I’m not with my computer at the moment but i do have the manual for my motherboard with me, my machine has a MSI K8MM3 motherboard with a AMD Athlon processor, not so sure about the speed of my processor. I have 768 of RAM at 400MHz installed at moment but will be upgrading to 2GB of RAM when i upgrade my graphics card. So what sort of graphics card do you recommend? Without breaking the bank what are my options? Look forward the replies so i can order and install soon.

My spec

my machines spec

windows XP Pro
MSI K8MM3 motherboard
768 of RAM
AMD Sempron 2800 1.61 GHz processor
MSI FX5200 graphics card

will upgrade RAM to 2 GB

First question that must be asked: what PSU do you have (model, wattage etc)

Your motherboard only supports AGP, so the question comes down to "do you now or intend to ever play games?" If the answer is no, then you can purcahse the HD3850 in AGP if you can find it or a HD4600 AGP serires, which will be a significant jump in processing power.

HD3850 http://www1.sapphiretech.com/us/products/products_overview.php?gpid=227

HD4600 http://www.sapphiretech.com/presentation/product/?cid=1&leg=&psn=000101&gid=4&sgid=571

You also need more RAM, and your board supports DDR only. Get 2GB at least.

If you want to play games then you need a new computer, however if not upgrade your graphics card to a much more modern GPU, please download PC Wizard from my sig and install it. Then go to FILE, SAVE AS and click OK (defualt text file). Then copy and paste that text into this thread along with your PSU make and model (look at the sticker). Remember, don't just wack a new GPU in there without making sure you have sufficient 12V rail amperage.

cheers

My PSU is a allied al-c400atx which i think is a 380W ATX power supply. so what do you guys recommend?

I do not intend to play game on my PC i will only be browsing watching videos or performing simply tasks.

I have looked at the two cards you have recommended but they don’t seem to have a HDMI port? Am i missing some thing here?

To address your original question, you will definitely see a higher video quality if you use a DVI to HDMI cable, rather than using S-Video. But yeah, a better video card definitely won't hurt either.

thanks for the input, i know i need sum RAM and a video card but what video card? and how should i connect it ? dvi to hdmi? or hdmi to hdmi? can i get some direct answers please as im a bit confused
