PC Went BANG and continues to do so.. HELP!

I froze on Half-life 2 and suddenly the computer just went bang and completely shut off, no burning smells though.

I tried switching it back on, didn't work. Checked if fuse had gone, it had. Changed for another 3 amp one (same as before). Switched power, lights came on and it started for about 3 seconds then went bang again..

What is the problem here? Is it the PSU? Do i need a new one? Is it the motherboard? Please help!

Sounds like a short to ground on the mobo which would mean time for a new one. (FYI: short to grounds blow the fuse 99.9% of the time)

I would think you have a short somewhere, but i must also wonder, why are you using a 3amp fuse, surely for any new PSU it would be a 13amp fuse??

The computer came with a 3 amp fuse. Is there any way i can fix the short?

By the way, i've had the computer 3 days. It's brand new.

He already narrowed it down to the PSU.

The blown fuse isn't the problem. It's merely the effect of the problem. The blow because power is shorted to ground before the last load in the circuit; that could be either in the circuitry of the PSU or mobo. It's a toss up between the 2 imo.

Try unplugging everything from the motherboard except the video card and the main power to the motherboard. See if it posts. If it does, then turn it off and try installing 1 item, reboot, fuse still good? Then try 1 more and so on until it recurs. If you tried all of the following, and it still blows, then it's your MB.

Or, go to compusa or some other computer store and buy a power supply tester. You can get a decent one for around $20. Plug your psu into it and see if it blows, if it does, then you know the cause.

One like this would be a nice one.
COOLMAX PS-224 LCD Power Supply Tester

I tried it again today and it powered up.

BUT.. the processor is overheating, might of been what caused it to go bang in the first place..

Please check my post in CPUs & Overclocking.

A over heating cpu most likely will not cause a power supply to blow a fuse. Unless it is taking to much voltage. You might want to make sure that your voltages are set right in your bio's for your cpu. If you are overclocking then you might want to turn it down some.
